Auditions for Neil Simon’s “God’s Favorite” will be June 26-27
The Potomac Playmakers proudly announce auditions for the first show of the 2023-2024 Season, the classic Neil Simon comedy “God’s Favorite!” In the play, successful Long Island businessman Joe Benjamin is a modern-day ‘Job’ with a demanding wife, ungrateful children, and wise-cracking household employees. Just when it seems things couldn’t get any worse, he is visited by Sidney Lipton, a.k.a. a Messenger from God (and compulsive film buff) with a mission: test Joe’s faith and report back to “the Boss.” The jokes and Tests of Faith fly fast and furious as Neil Simon spins a contemporary morality tale like no other!
Produced with kind permission from Concord Theatricals Corp., “God’s Favorite” will be directed by Wanda Dittmann. Audition dates are scheduled for June 26 and June 27, 2023 at 7:00 p.m., and will be held at the Potomac Playmakers Performing Arts Center, located at 17303 W. Washington Street, Hagerstown, Maryland 21740. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. The script calls for five male performers and three female performers, ranging in ages from 20-65. Individuals of all races, ethnicities, and gender identifications will be considered. Show dates for “God’s Favorite” will be September 8-10 and September 15-17, 2023.

Al and Willie as “Lewis and Clark” were top-billed vaudevillians for over forty years. Now they aren’t even speaking. When CBS requests them for a “History of Comedy” retrospective, a grudging reunion brings the two back together, along with a flood of memories, miseries, and laughs. The story follows the attempt by a young theatrical agent to re-unite his elderly uncle, a former vaudevillian great, with his long-time stage partner for a TV reunion. Despite their celebrated reputation, the two old men have not spoken in twelve years. Besides remastering their sketch, the two men have numerous issues to work out before they are ready to return to the public eye.

This is a wonderful, off beat variation on the saloon situation comedy. Nuclear bombs have destroyed much of the U.S. and various denizens of this working class bar are trying to decide what to do. Enter a travelling salesman who turns out to be is God, come to offer the bartender immortality if he will write a new Bible and get it right this time.
